A Year of Painting

2018 has been a year immersed in my creative practice with painting, I have been really fortunate to have had this opportunity to do so. The first half of the year produced many colourful paintings, some delicate and others extremely bold and wild.

As the exhibition, 'From Scared to Sacred', closes today, it is a moment to share heartfelt gratitude to all who were involved in its creation.

Although it was an art exhibition, it housed so much more than art, it offered essence of sacredness for those who entered the space and engaged. For everyone involved in contributing towards this event, this was something we were deeply passionate about.

I wish to thank these remarkable people for co-creating and bringing this exhibition to life, including Ros de Souza, Bruce Abbott, Shona Anne Hunter, Gerard Klecha, Josh Cheng, Sarah Bussell, Georgia Ruse, Sophie Moleta, Tan Sohal, and Simon Attenborough. Thank you for bringing your individual gifts and sacredness in conceiving this experience and event. It has been a deeply profound experience, creatively and spiritually working with you all.

Dearest Ros de Souza, thank you for being a pillar throughout the entire process, for your love, encouragement and belief. My deep gratitude to you for your heart-felt, passionate and compelling speech in opening the exhibition! I was thrilled to be sharing the night with Ian and yourself, I cherish you both.

Thank you to Bruce John Abbott and Shona Anne Hunter from Replants, for the powerful collaborative experience in creating the soulful unveiling of the artwork, it could have only happened with yourselves in this manner. Your beautiful sacred space, and landscape of grass trees was the perfect place to share the body of work, From Scared to Sacred.

Opening night, 'From Scared to Sacred' Solo Exhibition

So many people braved the wild weather to come down and attend the opening, 'From Scared to Sacred'. It was touch and go for a while with the wild weather, thankfully the rains stopped for the 45 minutes which allowed the guests to be able to participate in the fire, ceremony and ritual. Over 120 people viewed the artwork through the ceremonial process.

Many who attended the exhibition, were deeply moved by the experience. Each artwork seemed to stir different emotions and touched people as they moved through the exhibition. Some artworks provoking, and others awakening spirit.

Really grateful to all who shared in this extraordinary evening and to those who helped create this vision. It was extraordinary to be able to exhibit and share the beautiful story that this artwork has to share when seen together as a body of work.

In July & August of 2017, Ginette Hillman will stage her first solo exhibition at The Glass Studio at Replants in Fremantle, Titled ‘From Scared to Sacred’.

The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturday 29th July, from 10-4pm, followed by private viewing during August, by appointment.

Hillman’s work arises out of an exploration of states of transcendence where form and chaos, embodiment and dissolution, death and resurrection find passionate expression. Her large canvases can be seen as sites of existential and sacred battle.

"The artefact has an almost shamanic function of opening the viewer to his or her own possibility of transformation.” Jennifer Kornberger

Ginette, along with Bruce Abbott, owner of Replants, worked to transform the space. The artwork will be presented in a way that will allow the viewer to participate in the sacred process.

Painting "From Scared to Sacred"

A new body of artwork was created over 2016 with the theme, " From Scared to Sacred". Painting "From Scared to Sacred" flowed organically from the previous year's "Shades of Indigo". The blue paintings which were very other worldly began to morph into earthly existence. Bright colours emerged in my paintings in surprising ways, I blame this new colour explosion from sharing painting time with dear friend Ian de Souza. Thank you Ian for this wonderful shift of passion into my artwork.

Still although a new essence was flowing through the work, some ethereal themes were butting through the images. Often a tree became, well a graceful woman for instance, which can be seen here during the development of the painting, Sacred Feminine. I took a lot of inspiration from nature, painting from local walking spots such as Bibra Lake and Manning Park. I would be reflecting on my photographs from walks, and painting with images of trees, and literally these would become quite archetypal in nature. It became obvious my internal spiritual exploration was splashing through the artwork. So the theme "From Scared to Scared" birthed itself, and it seems perfect to be able to bring this sacred and earthly journey together in my artwork from 2015 & 2016, and share my first solo exhibition in July 2017. A private launch, for the exhibition, "From Scared to Scared' will take place at the Glass Studio at Replants in Fremantle, during the evening of July 28th with an ethereal setting, audiences will be given an experience which matches the artwork.  The exhibition will open to the public on the Saturday the 29th and following this 'From Scared to Sacred', will be available for private viewing during the month of August.
